Shkodra

A diamond-shaped city wedged between the Rozafa Citadel, the magnificent Albanian Alps, deep blue Lake Shkodra, a 30-kilometre sand beach and the serene Buna river delta reservation - Shkodra is a diamond in the rough with plenty of potential.
While many visitors quickly breeze though the city, Shkodra’s turbulent 2400-year history has left plenty of interesting relics that make a stay in Albania’s cultural capital worthwhile.
Hundreds of years of no-nonsense religious and ethnic tolerance resulted in booming trade, witnessed by Shkodra’s grand merchants’ homes, and dozens of mosques and Catholic and Orthodox churches standing in close proximity to each other. With travel to Albania now easier than ever before, and the number of visitors to Shkodra increasing, facilities for travellers are improving rapidly, with good hotels and several excellent restaurants now established.
The Rozafa Castle was probably founded by Illyrians. Later it was rebuilt several times by Romans, Venetians and Ottomans. The castle ruins consist of 3 courtyards and a few buildings.
The oldest still standing structure on the castle grounds is the St. Stephen's Church, which dates back to 1319. One of the main reasons to visit the castle is its location on a 130 m high hilltop, which offers panoramic views of Shkoder, the Buna and Drini rivers as well as the southern end of Lake Shkodra.
In 2010 admission to the castle was 200 Leke (less than 2 Euro).
Directions
The Rozafa Castle is located on a small hill about 2,5 km southwest of Shkoder's city centre.
As we were a bit short on time, we took a taxi to the castle (500 Leke), but walked back to town. The walk led along a new promenade at the river Buna and was therefore quite pleasant.
Another option to get to the castle is the public bus which stops somewhere at the main road below the castle. From there you still have to climb the hill to the entrance of the castle.
Parruces Mosque
Beside the dominating Ebu Bekr Mosque, there is a second large mosque in the city centre of Shkoder. Its name is Parruce Mosque (Xhamia Parruces) and it was the very first sight which we spotted when we got off our bus coming from Ulcinj in Montenegro.
The Parruces Mosque is dedicated to the family of Haxhi Sait Jakup Fishta and it was completed in 2006.
Directions:
The Parruces Mosque is situated near the north western end of the square Sheshi Parruce, just opposite to the Lulishtja e Parruces Park.
Migjeni Theatre
After the theatre in Tirana, the Migjeni Theatre is considered the second most important theatre in Albania.
First performances took place in 1879 and during the communist years many plays of Bertolt Brecht were shown here.
Up to 1919 women were not allowed to perform on stage, which meant that men had to play the female characters.
Directions:
The Migjeni Theatre stands at the square Sheshi Demokracia (former: Sheshi 5 Heronjte), right in the heart of Shkoder's city centre.
The large Ebu Bekr Mosque
which is the focal point of the local Muslim community, dominates Shkoder's city centre. Also known as Al-Zamil Mosque, it was built in 1995 with funds from Saudi Arabia and Egypt. It stands on the site of an even earlier mosque. The Ebu Bekr Mosque has been extensively renovated in 2008.
Directions:
The Ebu Bekr Mosque is surrounded by a large garden. It stands somewhere between the Rozafa Hotel and the Colosseo Hotel; right in the heart of Shkoder.

Gjirokastra, the city of a thousand steps.

Gjirokastra Castle is one of the most popular tourist destinations all over Albania. It is a huge, panoramic castle overlooking the entire valley below, where the river Drina flows. On the top there is the Weapons Museum, which houses guns of World War II, traditional weapons and conventional weapons, which cover a long historical period. Must-thing to do is a walk in the city, among the houses, the Byzantine church of St.Michael Archangel, the Mosque, the bazaar and the beautiful courtyards.
Gjirokastra is one of the important cultural and tourist centers of South Albania. Because of its unique architectural and historical values, from 2005 Gjirokastra is part of UNESCO World heritage sites. The Castle is the largest building of the historic center of Gjirokastra. It was built on a large boulder with rock that resembles a huge ship. Within it there are galleries, covered with barrel vaults that occupy the central part of the fortification. According to historians, the castle had their origins in the fifth century AD, but according to the UNESCO this castle need archaeological studies to correctly verify his history. The characteristic bazaar is another great thing to visit, next to the inhabited part of the city. The museums are the National Weapons Museum at the castle, the Ethnographic Museum, historic houses such as Zekate House(1812), Skendulate, Angone, Babameto and Kabilate. Valuable building is also the architectural complex in the historic districts "the Vjeter Pazar", "Partizani", "Dunavat" and "Hazmurat".Besides the buildings in Ottoman style, really interesting are the buildings in the historical center of Gjirokastra in the Italian XIX century style, like the hotel "Royal", the former “Banco di Napoli", the former shopping center Ziga, the High School, Villa "Kokalari" and Villa "Papavangjeli".
National Folk Festival:
Gjirokastra is the home of an internationally famous festival of traditional Albanian folk culture. It takes place in the autumn of every forth year. The first festival took place in 1968 and it has since become the symbol of Albanian national folk culture. Held in the open air in Gjirokastra’s castle, it features the best of the Albanian folk traditions, including music, dancing, arts and crafts, and costumes.
Over 1000 Albanian singers and dancers from Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and the United States performed in the last National Folk festival from September 29 to October 5, 2004. The next is expected to be scheduled for the autumn of 2009.

The old city of Berat

Gorica Quarter
Gorica is the third residential quarter of Berat, having developed since the 16th century. Located across the river and until recently connected to Berat only by the landmark Gorica bridge, most houses have large gardens giving it a more rural character. Gorica has retained much of its original way of life and still breathes the silence and slow pace of the past.
gorica-quarter-berat
Mangalem Quarter
The historic quarter of Mangalem is a well preserved area containing buildings of characteristic architecture and charming narrow alleys. While the Mangalem riverfront has traditionally been a bazaar area, the residences of merchants and artisans extend on the steep slope above. The quarter is shaped like an elegant pyramid, on top of which is the castle. The harmonization with the terrain is performed with a rare architectural mastery. The main visual characteristic of this quarter is the number of windows which have given the whole city the epithet “ the city of windows on top of each other”.

The Castle of Berat
The castle rises on a rocky hill on the left bank of the Osum river and is accessible only from the south. It is the oldest and most representative monument of the city. After beign burned down by the Romans in 200 BC, the walls were strengthened in the fifth century under the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II, and were rebuilt during the 6th century under Emperor Justinian and again in the 13th century under the Despot of Epirus, Michael Angelus Comnenus. The churches inside the fortress were largely built from this time onwards and because of their characteristic architecture are preserved as cultural munuments.
The castle hill rises 187 m above the sea level with an area of 9.6 hectares. There are 24 towers of different forms and sizes along the impressive Hellenistic and medieval walls. The interior once contained 42 churches and chapels, though now there are only 8 intact shrines and the ruins of 2 mosques. The interior of the castle is still inhabited today.

Rafting in the Osumi River Berat Albania

The Canyons of Osumi River Albania
The Osumi River canyon is one of the most spectacular natural attractions of Albania. During the spring, high water from melting snow makes it possible to explore all 26 km (16 mi) of the canyon from the river. Spring is also the best time to view the many waterfalls in the canyons, which thunder from above as explorers pass below on boats. The rapids are Class-III, so one does not need prior white water experience to join the fun. At the end of the summer, when the water is lower, boating the full length of the canyon is not possible, but there are many wonderful hikes with opportunities for swimming in various pools and streams. The edges of the canyon are notable for its unique ecosystem that preserves the greenery on both sides of canyon year-round. Mediterranean bushes like heath and briar flourish along with a rich and lively world of flora and fauna. On the slopes of the canyon, erosive activity has created pockmarked cavern walls, with small caves to explore as well. Some of the rock formations in the canyon have fanciful names such as the Cathedral, the Eye, and the Demon’s Door.

General Information about Dardha

Dardha lies 20 km from Korca at an altitude of over 1,300m above sea level. Founded centuries ago by families fleeing the occupation of central Albania, this remote mountain village is nestled between the Morava and Gramoz Mountains. The well-preserved stone homes highlight a proud village that has been left largely untouched over time. The green fields, fresh summer days and cold snowy winters make Dardha a popular tourist destination throughout the year for its unparalleled natural, architectural and culinary traditions.
Dardha is a small beautiful village in the Korçë District that was founded by the refugees who were chased by the Turkish invaders, mostly for not wanting to change their religion. The name "Dardha" (pear in Albanian) comes from a legend that says that when the refugees found a place to hide, when asked "where are you?", they said "At the cottage under the pear". It was a wild pear which was nearby their cottage.
Dardhë is also a well known ski area in Albania since the 1920s.
Mention Dardha to anyone in Korça you'll instantly get a smile, so good is the reputation of this small mountain village. Lovelier than any other village in Albania, Dardha is set in the Morava mountains 20 kilometres southwest of Korça, at 1344 metres above sea level and has about 50 permanent inhabitants.
The village is sheltered by the Shën Pjeter and the rugged Guri i Vjeshtës (Autumn Rock) mountains and is surrounded by flowering fields, orchards and forests, making it an ideal base for hikes in the surroundings.
Founded in 1600 by Orthodox Christians escaping from Ottoman conversion campaigns, Darhda is famous for felt processing (incorporated in the local black/red folk dress), Dharda had 500 houses in the early 1900s. Nowadays, the village consists of a few narrow cobbled streets winding between stone houses, many of which are decorated with carved symbols and retain their traditional flagstone roof tiles. Most of the village's stone houses look rather smart after recent renovations, yet there are few modern additions to spoil the atmosphere.
Dharda has few specific sights, though it's worth entering the small Shën Gjergj (Saint George) church for its old icons. Scattered along the streets are several public fountains and wells spouting natural mineral water, believed locally to cure all manner of ailments. Drink sulpher-spiced water from the aptly named Uji i Qelbur ('filthy water') spring if you have stomach problems.
Apart from the pretty streets and mountain views, the local cuisine is a reason to visit; Dardha is famous for its huge fire-baked lakror onion and tomato pies, the unusual side dishes like snails, mushrooms and corn flour pie, all best washed down with the local raki pear liquor.
The annual village festival is on Shën Maria (St Mary's; 16 August), when the road is clogged with people returning to the ancestral home for the day, and everybody dresses up in their best folk clothes and joins in the religious rituals and traditional dances. In winter, some hardy types attempt to ski on the slopes around the village, though there are no rental or lift facilities at all.
Practicalities
Dardha can be reached across basic gravel roads by car or taxi; there's no minibus service. Heading south out of Korça, turn left into Boboshtica after passing the new prison, and left again at the World War II monument, pass the Shën Maria church and follow the road up into the gorge.
Accommodation is available in a handful of village homes where one or two rooms are available for guests, at about 1000 lek per room. It's difficult to book ahead so it's best to simply ask around on arrival. The Shtëpia e Pushimit (tel. 069 266 60 10/069 214 85 75; 15 rooms, 600 lek per person) is a rather basic converted workers resort, with small rooms, a few dorm rooms, shared showers, a restaurant with pool table and terrace.
The best meals are to be had at the local's homes; ask around or look for Mrs. Stolie Mekolli for the best lakror pie in town, though don't expect fast service; order, go for a walk and come back later. Alternatively, the Batelli bar and restaurant along the road at the top of the village is a great place for traditional food, served on the grassy terrace with its great views.

Korca - the city of serenades

Though small, Korça has a fantastic range of sights in and just outside its city limits.
Boulevard Republika is a good street for a stroll, and on summer evening you'll be joined by hundreds of locals doing their xhiropromenade when the street is closed off for traffic. It's lined by old villas with decorative metal railings, flower gardens and fragrant linden trees.
Do take the time to explore the old streets away from the modern boulevards - you can find typical old cobbled streets between Blv. Gjergi Kastrioti and Blv. Republika, though the prettiest streets are directly behind the cathedral.
Orthodox Cathedral [Katedralja Ngallja e Krishtit]
Orthodox CathedralKorça's Orthodox Cathedral of the Ressurection was completely rebuilt in 1992 after the previous church on this site, St. George cathedral, was destroyed by the Communist authorities in 1968. Now the impressive pink building is the largest church in Albania, and the second largest in the Balkans. Inside, the modest white interior is is dominated by a huge carved wooden iconostasis. Also note the Albanian eagles carved into the chairs.
Medieval Art Museum [Muzeu Kombëtar i Artit Mesjetar]
Medieval Art MuseumKorça's best museum has an excellent collection of 6,500 medieval and modern icons from Southern Albania, as well as 1,500 other objects, of which some 200 icons and 50 metal objects are on display in this curious building. Once the most important Orthodox church of Korça, the Mitropolia church of Shën Gjergj (Saint George) was 'renovated' beyond recognition during totalitarian rule and opened as a museum in 1987 – you can still recognise bits of the church inside and next door in the newly re-established Shën Gjergj church. Starting with icons from the 14th century and proceeding in chronological order, most icons in the museum are from the 16th-19th centuries. Many are from Voskopoja, which in the 17th was one of the main centres for iconography in the Balkans. Orthodox art was highly regulated, and all icons had to be painted following precise instructions, with a fixed position prescribed for each saint; Mary can only be depicted in nine poses. Note the two icons of St. George that incorporate grisly martyrdom scenes, with Turks (representing evil of course) inflicting unimaginable cruelty upon unwitting Christians who immediately acquire haloes. The museum's highlight is the collection of icons by the 16th century Albanian master Onufri, which stand out for their vivid colours and wonderful detail. Onufri started his career in Berat (where there is a smaller but equally interesting icon museum dedicated to him) but made his finest works later in Gjirokastra.
Phone ahead to make sure the museum is open, and to inform if the knowledgeable English-speaking icon experts are present. Postcards and an English-language booklet are for sale at the entrance.
Admission 200 lek.
Mirahor Mosque [Xhamia e Iljaz Bej Mirahorit]
Mirahor MosqueKorça's venerable mosque from 1484, the oldest in Albania, was founded by Iljaz Bey Mirahor, who played an important role in the seige of Constantinopel in 1453. The modest building looks a bit battered and its minaret was only recently restored after being knocked down by an earthquake long ago, but it's a true survivor. The building is usually locked up, but before and after prayertime the community is happy to show you the interior with it's depictions of Islam's holy cities Medina and Mecca.

Very modern, lovely and warm hotel in Korca. The restaurant is great with tasty foods nicely served and displayed. The building next door is a nice club where you can enjoy the taste of shisha (hookah) at the roof bar.
I would highly recommend this hotel on every season, being it hot summer months or icy winter.
The ladies at the front desk spoke very good English and were exceptionally helpful. The room was furnished in modern style and quite spacious. The same applied to the bathroom equipped with lots of glass and offering plenty of storage options. The mattress of the king-size bed was of good quality. The free WiFi worked perfectly.
